Installing a ceiling fan is a suitable job for the home handyman. It usually will take anywhere from four to six hours. Be sure to keep the box until the fan is safely installed and working. It makes returning a damaged unit easier. Below are step by step instructions for successful installation:
Shut off power at the circuit breaker, not at the wall switch. Double-check to assure the power is off. If you are replacing an old fan, don’t assume it was properly installed. Next, install the mounting plate. Thread the wires through the center of the plate. If bolts are provided, push each one through the mounting plate. With bolts in place, tighten the plate onto the ceiling.
Ready the fan for installation by following manufacturer’s assembly directions carefully. Assemble the down rod and canopy. Run fan leads through the downrod and screw on downrod tightly. Tighten set screws. Slip on canopy and then install the bulb shaped metal fitting at the top of the downrod. Do not attach fan blades at this time.
