So you are in the market for an automatic garage door opener? When such things were introduced long ago and far away, my dad would jokingly impress the neighbors by telling them that, not only did he have a garage door opener, but that it was voice activated. As they exclaimed in amazement (this being decades before anything was voice activated; nobody had even invented “The Clapper” yet). He would then turn to me and say, “Go open the garage door”, and everybody but me had a good chuckle.

Well, like a growing number of people, I am no longer a garage door opener. I have a modern Genie unit doing service in my garage. I consider my self to be of at least moderate ability as a do-it-yourselfer, and after giving the matter some research and frank thought, I tackled the garage door opener installation myself.

Each and every box containing such a unit is carefully packed with garage door opener parts and a manual pertaining to its installation and operation. I will not presume to substitute my knowledge or experience for that found in the manual specific to the unit you may choose. Rather, I will just point out some things you may care to consider before you even choose a unit or start installing one.

Take a look at your garage door. Is it an ancient behemoth or one of the relatively lightly built units made in recent years? If the former, be sure to advise the salesman you are dealing with, as you may require a heavier duty unit than what he may assume.

Test the operation of your door. If you raise it to chest height, does it plunge heavily to the floor? If so, beware. This is a serious indication that your door is out of balance on its mounting springs. Garage door springs of all descriptions are fraught with at least some risk, the single ‘torsion spring’ type being particularly so. Dual springs on the sides of your doors are less dangerous, but they are also under considerable tension, and if you do not find instruction on how to adjust them, you are probably better off to consult an expert.

Also check that the door goes up and down smoothly. If it does not, your rails may be out of adjustment. If the springs are not properly adjusted or the rails are out of alignment, you will risk imposing an unacceptable load on your garage door opener, leading to premature failure, if not a potential disaster.

If your door passes these tests and you are confident in your abilities, by all means go ahead and give installing the opener a try. Begin by inventorying the parts and reading and comprehending the manual completely. If you find yourself scratching your head about the installation, call customer service and see if they can illuminate you.

Speaking of illumination, an automatic garage door opener is made ‘automatic’ by the operation of electricity. Although the electrical components of these units tend to be simple and/or low voltage, if you do not ‘get it’, consult with or even hire someone who does. The low voltage components of a modern opener are critical to its safe operation, even if they present a low risk of serious shock.

If you have a lot of stuff at home, you would like to store this in something that is not only sturdy but also able to carry a lot of weight. This is the reason that one-ton storage bins were made which in fact is also used for other purposes. For that, agricultural, commercial and industrial companies will need a storage saving device that can carry more than that. But for the home, one ton is more than enough to hold your power tools, screws and even a few spare parts.

When you decide to have one at home, your primary concern should be about safety. These things normally don’t have locks so you should put this inside a tool shed under lock and key or place this high on a shelf or hung on a ceiling. For this to be placed on a high shelf, you have to be sure that the rack you are using can support the weight. It is advisable to use metal racks here because these are much stronger than wood.

You can mount a one-ton storage bin on the ceiling by using a pulley system so this can be brought up or down. This can also be screwed there then you will have to get a ladder to get what you want. Aside from just using it to store stuff in the garage, you can also use the one-ton storage bin to hide old stuff like clothes, trophies, toys and other memorabilia. This can be placed in the attic for the time being until you are ready to part with it or make some money by holding a garage sale.

You can’t move a ton of stuff on your own because you could strain your back. For that, you will need to use a pushcart or remove some of the items first before lifting it. Just like regular storage bins, the one-ton version comes in different colors, models and designs. There is the attached type container, the closed or mesh type container, the collapsible wire container and the corrugated bin. Best of all, each of them can be stacked over one another.

So, if you are interested in buying one, you should head on over to the hardware store and ask the sales clerk about what they have in their shelves. You can also find some of these online so make an order and have this delivered to your home in the next few days. Some companies will offer you a discount should you buy in bulk. Although this won’t be needed now, just imagine how much you will be able to save when you will finally need to use them or when one is not enough to store everything?

Your home may not be a warehouse but people cannot help but preserve some of the stuff they find hard to part with. You can still keep them and at the same time make sure they stay in good condition by getting one-ton storage bins that are a heaven send because they can take on a great amount of load compared to others that will just break and crack. So buy it now and keep your stuff organized to make your home space efficient

The garage is an important space in the house. Not only is it used to keep the vehicles of the house but also used to store some old things which cannot be kept inside the house. The pre-requisites of a good garage door are determined by three important factors. The main points worth noting are, the door should be pliable, well functioning and most importantly be well protected. All these traits are determined by the garage door hardware.

Garage gates or doors are made up of many materials but the metal doors are considered to be the best option. The gate or the door is made up by a number of struts and hinges. The struts and hinges form the major part of the door because they are responsible for the proper opening and closing of the garage gate. In short the well functioning and pliability of the gate depends on hinges.

These days people have a lot of options to choose from when it comes to garage gates but the best option one can look for are the steel doors. Gates made of steel work just perfect as garage doors since they are long lasting and rust proof. Other metal doors may look classy initially may later get corroded and rusted. Even regular painting and oiling the hinges won’t help the proper functioning of the door.

However, now days the garage gates come of alloy metals which are rust proof. There are people who think that metallic doors are unpleasant in terms of design but that isn’t true. The metallic garage doors are now available in classy designs and colours.

There are certain things to be borne in mind while maintaining the garage gates and related accessories. The most important care being, regular painting of the garage-doors to prevent corrosion and rusting. Care should be taken to see that the hinges and the struts of the gates and checked from time to time. It is important to maintain the doors and gates well; else they will creak and may end up getting jammed and ultimately not function well.

When you’re buying a garage door you need to think about more than just how it looks. In this article I’ll be discussing a few of the things that you need to consider so that you make sure you get the right door for your home. If you don’t consider all the points than you run the risk of buying a door that doesn’t suit your home or doesn’t provide you with all the facilities that you need.

Obviously, the thing that affects most people’s judgment as to which door to buy is how it looks. You need to make sure that your garage door not only looks good on its own but also with the rest of the house. This means that you need to choose a material that matches the style of the house as well as any surrounding houses so that it doesn’t look out of place.

Another thing you need to consider is how secure a doors. In general, the thicker the door the more secure it will be as it’s more difficult to break. However, you need to make sure you buy a high-quality door if you want to ensure that it is as secure as possible. Security should probably be your primary concern when you’re choosing a new garage door as it’s an extremely important factor.

One other thing that you need to consider is the type of door that you want to buy. For example, shutter doors are becoming more and more popular although overhead doors are also a good choice.

If you want to clean up your house and put things away then a purchase of metal storage containers can be of much help. Your belongings will remain intact and secure in these containers. These metal storage containers come in all sizes so you can buy either a small metal box or a big metal container according to your need.

Let us have a look at the different kinds of metal storage containers. The first type is an all welded security bin cabinet which is made of 14 gauge steel and its back and sides are strengthened with heavy metal. These cabinets come with small, in-built bins.

Heavy duty storage cases are another type of container. These cases are made of aluminium and have strong and big security locks along with handles that are merged into the cabinet.

Huge storage containers are also available. These containers are made strong by putting a thick gauge steel frame inside the container and have a capacity of holding up to 800 pounds. They are provided with wheels to increase their flexibility and transportability.

The exterior of many metal containers are made with heavy polyurethane and the interior has a rugged metal frame. These containers can serve many purposes like storage of tools at home or at job sites. The safety locks give security so you can store your valuable belongings in them too. The wheels are available as a choice and you can buy them if you need to move the containers from one place to another.

The next type of metal storage containers are a group of metal toolboxes meant for the storage of tools. These are made of diamond tread plate material and can also be easily transported to your required place. They are made secure with safety latches and handles are also provided to make their movement easier.

These metal storage container come with many options and you can buy the one that meets your requirement. You will have to select the kind you need before making the purchase and you need to be careful regarding the size and holding capacity of the metal container. It has to match the weight and size of the objects that are to be put inside it. If you are going to ship the metal storage container to some place, you will also have to check if it meets the shipping requirements.

If you’ve decided to tackle the piles of clutter in your garage in hopes of one day actually fitting your car into it then we have some advice for you! This article will give you several tips for organizing a garage as well as how to find affordable storage solutions to help organize it.

The goal of organizing your garage should not be an effort to store all of your “stuff” that is piled up everywhere. It should be to remove things you no longer use or need, and then finding an efficient way to store the remaining items that you do need.

Organizing a Garage Step 1: Remove Clutter

This task could be considered fun or heartbreaking, depending on what is stored in your garage. You need to clear out all of your junk, plain and simple. An easy rule of thumb is if an item is over a year old and you haven’t used it then toss it, donate it, or sell it. If you think you emotionally attached to a chain saw that has been broken for 10 years that you hoped to get working some day then you may want to get some help from a friend who is not emotionally attached to help you out.

Now, depending on your garage this may be just a few things or days worth of sorting. So don’t let anyone fool you that you can do this in an hour or two. The key is to start in one corner and methodically move through all of your items and place them in 4 piles: keep, trash, donate, sell. Do NOT take forever trying to sell or donate items, have a quick yard sale if you have to and anything left behind that nobody purchase you should move to the curb and put a FREE sign on it.

Organizing a Garage Step 2: Game Plan

Look at what is now left behind in your garage that needs to be organized and stored. Now either draw on a piece of paper or take mental note in your head the different areas of your garage where these items should be grouped and stored. For instance lawn equipment in one area, bikes in another, etc.

Then take a trip to your home improvement store like Lowes, Home Depot, or your local hardware store to get storage solution ideas. Look at all of the different storage solutions and determine what you need. It could be shelves, hooks, storage closets, pegboard, tool chests, and more. With some help from an employee you can figure out what you need.

Organizing a Garage Step 3: Storage Solutions

Now that you know what you need for storage solutions do the following:

If you have the budget then just purchase the items you need right at the home improvement store. Keep in mind many of these items can be expensive.

If you can’t afford these items new then look for used items. A few places to look are:garage sales or newspapers. But my favorite place for picking up (and getting rid of) used items is Craigslist.com. You can search for used items and yard sales on this website. And its become extremely popular so many people are both buying and selling on it. Don’t bother with eBay unless you can get a huge discount as you’ll have to pay for shipping, or just search within 25 miles or so of your zip code

If you don’t immediately find what you want for a storage solution at a good price don’t get discouraged, just keep searching. Items get listed on Craigslist constantly. If you are “tech savvy” you can set up an RSS feed with your search criteria, or even use your iPhone for searching (yes there’s a Craigslist app for that). Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your garage probably won’t get organized overnight but if you stick with it then it will look fantastic before you know it.
