So you are in the market for an automatic garage door opener? When such things were introduced long ago and far away, my dad would jokingly impress the neighbors by telling them that, not only did he have a garage door opener, but that it was voice activated. As they exclaimed in amazement (this being decades before anything was voice activated; nobody had even invented “The Clapper” yet). He would then turn to me and say, “Go open the garage door”, and everybody but me had a good chuckle.

Well, like a growing number of people, I am no longer a garage door opener. I have a modern Genie unit doing service in my garage. I consider my self to be of at least moderate ability as a do-it-yourselfer, and after giving the matter some research and frank thought, I tackled the garage door opener installation myself.

Each and every box containing such a unit is carefully packed with garage door opener parts and a manual pertaining to its installation and operation. I will not presume to substitute my knowledge or experience for that found in the manual specific to the unit you may choose. Rather, I will just point out some things you may care to consider before you even choose a unit or start installing one.

Take a look at your garage door. Is it an ancient behemoth or one of the relatively lightly built units made in recent years? If the former, be sure to advise the salesman you are dealing with, as you may require a heavier duty unit than what he may assume.

Test the operation of your door. If you raise it to chest height, does it plunge heavily to the floor? If so, beware. This is a serious indication that your door is out of balance on its mounting springs. Garage door springs of all descriptions are fraught with at least some risk, the single ‘torsion spring’ type being particularly so. Dual springs on the sides of your doors are less dangerous, but they are also under considerable tension, and if you do not find instruction on how to adjust them, you are probably better off to consult an expert.

Also check that the door goes up and down smoothly. If it does not, your rails may be out of adjustment. If the springs are not properly adjusted or the rails are out of alignment, you will risk imposing an unacceptable load on your garage door opener, leading to premature failure, if not a potential disaster.

If your door passes these tests and you are confident in your abilities, by all means go ahead and give installing the opener a try. Begin by inventorying the parts and reading and comprehending the manual completely. If you find yourself scratching your head about the installation, call customer service and see if they can illuminate you.

Speaking of illumination, an automatic garage door opener is made ‘automatic’ by the operation of electricity. Although the electrical components of these units tend to be simple and/or low voltage, if you do not ‘get it’, consult with or even hire someone who does. The low voltage components of a modern opener are critical to its safe operation, even if they present a low risk of serious shock.

The garage is an important space in the house. Not only is it used to keep the vehicles of the house but also used to store some old things which cannot be kept inside the house. The pre-requisites of a good garage door are determined by three important factors. The main points worth noting are, the door should be pliable, well functioning and most importantly be well protected. All these traits are determined by the garage door hardware.

Garage gates or doors are made up of many materials but the metal doors are considered to be the best option. The gate or the door is made up by a number of struts and hinges. The struts and hinges form the major part of the door because they are responsible for the proper opening and closing of the garage gate. In short the well functioning and pliability of the gate depends on hinges.

These days people have a lot of options to choose from when it comes to garage gates but the best option one can look for are the steel doors. Gates made of steel work just perfect as garage doors since they are long lasting and rust proof. Other metal doors may look classy initially may later get corroded and rusted. Even regular painting and oiling the hinges won’t help the proper functioning of the door.

However, now days the garage gates come of alloy metals which are rust proof. There are people who think that metallic doors are unpleasant in terms of design but that isn’t true. The metallic garage doors are now available in classy designs and colours.

There are certain things to be borne in mind while maintaining the garage gates and related accessories. The most important care being, regular painting of the garage-doors to prevent corrosion and rusting. Care should be taken to see that the hinges and the struts of the gates and checked from time to time. It is important to maintain the doors and gates well; else they will creak and may end up getting jammed and ultimately not function well.

When you’re buying a garage door you need to think about more than just how it looks. In this article I’ll be discussing a few of the things that you need to consider so that you make sure you get the right door for your home. If you don’t consider all the points than you run the risk of buying a door that doesn’t suit your home or doesn’t provide you with all the facilities that you need.

Obviously, the thing that affects most people’s judgment as to which door to buy is how it looks. You need to make sure that your garage door not only looks good on its own but also with the rest of the house. This means that you need to choose a material that matches the style of the house as well as any surrounding houses so that it doesn’t look out of place.

Another thing you need to consider is how secure a doors. In general, the thicker the door the more secure it will be as it’s more difficult to break. However, you need to make sure you buy a high-quality door if you want to ensure that it is as secure as possible. Security should probably be your primary concern when you’re choosing a new garage door as it’s an extremely important factor.

One other thing that you need to consider is the type of door that you want to buy. For example, shutter doors are becoming more and more popular although overhead doors are also a good choice.
